Be in balance is a diet and lifestyle counseling business in New York City founded by Katherine Pennington that helps women and men lose weight, gain energy, sleep better, reduce stress, get in shape and achieve more well-being and balance in their lives.

Having many clients with children and two children of her own, Katherine’s practice has naturally extended to children and she not only counsels parents about their children but also offers cooking classes for moms and children called Kids in the Kitch and Moms in the Kitch.

Katherine Pennington, CHHC, AADP, is a graduate of the Institute of Integrative Nutrition / Columbia Teachers College and has a degree in Plant-Based Nutrition from Cornell under the training of Dr. T.Colin Campbell. Katherine is also certified by the American Association of Drugless Practitioners, and is a founding member of Women for Family Nutrition, an organization dedicated to helping children get better food in schools and at home. Katherine is also a raw food chef and teacher and has her raw food certification through Allisa Cohen and Natalia Rose, and has completed additional chef training from Raw Chef Dan, founder of Quintessence.

Katherine has studied the diets and philosophies of the South Beach diet, the Atkins diet, Barry Sear’s The Zone, the Blood Type diet, Ayurveda, the Vegan diet, the raw food diet, juicing, macrobiotics, the food pyramid, the glycemic index and many more dietary theories. Katherine has additionally studied quantum physics, metaphysics, co-dependency, ADHD and addiction.

Katherine’s interest in health and nutrition began in high school when after competing nationally in horseback riding she developed anorexia. This experience began her journey of healing and interest in developing a deeper understanding of her relationship with food. After stumbling on a pivotal book by Anthony Robins called Diet for a New America, Katherine became a vegetarian.

Katherine now is a raw food vegan but feels that each person should find what works for them.

While pregnant with her first child 8 years ago, a friend took Katherine to her first yoga class at Jivamukti Yoga and she has been practicing ever since with Dharma Mittra, Kelly Morris and at Jivamukti. Practicing yoga has given her a deeper understanding of her body and the role food and nutrition plays in her life. Katherine is also an avid runner and began training for marathons, and qualified for the Boston marathon with a time of 3:15. She works with many clients who live very active lives and is experienced in advising athletes. Katherine loves to be active and encourage others to get themselves and their families out there exercising together!

Katherine has been featured in Real Simple magazine, has a regular monthly column at online magazine The Family Groove, writes regularly for She Knows, and other publications and regularly speaks and holds lectures at women’s groups such as the New York Junior League as well as private schools around New York City.

Katherine is a mother to two beautiful children, Caroline and Oliver and lives in New York City with their dog Haviland!
